New Year’s Resolutions For Budget Planning

Making New Year‘s resolutions has always been a popular annual tradition. This year, with the economy in such an unstable and unpredictable state, many people are choosing to make budget planning a New Year‘s resolution. If you take a well-thought out approach to implementing a realistic budget in the New Year, there is no reason why you can’t be successful in managing your finances.

Below are a number of tips to making your New Year‘s resolutions for budget planning a success:

Newyear

Eliminate Debt Overload: Millions of people are saddled with too much debt which makes it very difficult to manage. The first thing you should do is work to reduce or eliminate excessive debt. One method of slashing your debt is to consolidate your bills. When you consolidate your debt, you will be able to take all of your outstanding bills such as your mortgage, credit card bills, car loans, and personals loans, and put them into one loan. This will provide you with one monthly payment with one interest rate. It will lower costs and you will improve your credit rating.

New Year’s Resolutions For Budget Planning

Organize Finances: Organize your bills and figure out your monthly fixed expenses such as your utilities, car payments…etc. This will ensure you know exactly when bills are due so you can avoid late payments. Make a list of the dates each bill is due and post it in a place you view everyday such as beside the computer.

Create a Realistic Budget: It is important to know how much money is coming into the household monthly and how much is leaving the household. Creating a budget will help you manage your cash flow so you are living within your means. It will also help you identify areas where you are spending too much money so you can develop methods to reduce the extra incidental costs.

Stretch Every Dollar: It is important to find ways to reduce your daily living costs. For instance, you can shop at thrift stores, buy products when there is a sale, buy a cheaper car instead of a brand new car, buy generic brands, take advantage of coupons, and look for clearance sales. Other personal cost cutting methods can include: bringing your own lunch to work, carpooling to save on fuel, cutting down on entertainment activities, dining-in instead of going to restaurants…etc. Finding ways to stretch your dollars can be a challenge, but it is not an impossible task.

New Years resolutions are only effective if you make a real commitment to keeping the resolutions. It is important to be aware that building a healthy long-term financial future will take fiscally realistic planning and time. When committing to fiscal prudence, it is important to focus on the big picture. The reward for keeping a New Year‘s resolution to practice good financial planning will be financial freedom, less stress, and learning self-control when shopping. The best benefit of budget planning in the New Year is that you will become a much healthier and happier person.

Newyear

But, whether it’s 1982, 1999, 2009, 2010, 2011… it sounds like a very good life philosophy to take into a new year, don’t you think!

Especially, if you think of ‘partying’ – like I do – as another form of living in the moment, enjoying what you do as much as you can, flowing with what life brings you, and – above all – growing…

So, on that note, I give you 7 free inspirational quotes to inspire you to GROW this coming new year.

And I shall link these inspirational quotations with the most common new year resolutions, to help illustrate the benefits of making AND achieving those resolutions (should they apply to you).

Just in case you needed any convincing, so to speak.

Common New Year Resolution #1: LOSE WEIGHT

“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.”

–Jim Rohn

So, does it *really* matter than you lose weight, or is it actually more important that you look after your body via healthy eating, and regular bouts of exercise.

Losing weight is hard, maybe even ‘impossible’ for you right now. But walking a bit more, and taking a little bit of extra care about the temple that is your body (don’t laugh!) is something you CAN do.

Choose a resolution you can achieve. It’s only fair on you.

Common New Year Resolution #2: STICK TO A BUDGET

“A fool and his money are easily parted.”

–Proverb

Hmm, it can be difficult to stick to a budget, it really can.

After all there are so many ‘shiny things’ to buy. There are so many items on sale at such cheap, cheap prices. And you’re going to go into debt at the end of the month, anyway, so what harm does this little extra spend make now?

Still, it is hard to argue with proverbs, you’ve got to admit.

Common New Year Resolution #3: FIND MY SOULMATE

“There is more hunger for love and appreciation in this world than for bread.”

–Mother Teresa

Love makes the world go round.

It also makes the world go ’round the bend’ with frustration:

* Why are there so many frogs to kiss?

* Why are all the best women taken?

* Why can’t he (or she) be more, y’know, ‘normal’ like me?

Quite simply – and it’s time to stand in front of the mirror now, Dear Reader – if you’re serious about finding a great partner in the new year, then you seriously have to change what you’re doing to attract them into your life.

Stop blaming the supply of fish.

Look in the mirror. The blame lies there. (Ouch.)

Common New Year Resolution #4: QUIT SMOKING

“If people don’t love themselves enough to cut down on their smoking, they may love someone else enough to do it.”

–Anonymous smoker

I’ve never been a smoker, so I don’t know how confoundedly difficult it is to quit the habit.

I don’t know how this habit weaves itself into the patterns of daily life, so that something as simple as that first cup of coffee in the day also yields a yearning for a quick drag.

I don’t know how someone else’s smoke can do the same.

But if you’re a smoker, you do – you know all of these things.

And you also know that it *is* possible to quit smoking – IF you want to.

It’s up to you…

Common New Year Resolution #5: FIND A BETTER JOB

“Without work, all life goes rotten. But when work is soulless, life stifles and dies.”

–Albert Camus

What is the point of work, at the end of the day, if it’s NOT a means to a satisfactory end?

Work to live or live to work. It’s a simple choice. It involves costs you might not be willing to pay – like saying ‘bye bye’ to the very latest car or TV or iPhone, etc. – but it IS a simple choice.

Work to live or live to work. Again, it’s up to you…

Common New Year Resolution #6: LEARN SOMETHING NEW

“Education is the best provision for old age.”

–Aristotle

There is nothing better for an aging mind than to be kept busy – busy with learning.

Just like the body needs exercise, so does the mind. And this is especially so when you consider the often mind-deadening impact that ‘popular’ TV has on it.

So learn a new language.

Or find a new hobby.

But keep stretching your mind…

Common New Year Resolution #7: GET ORGANISED

“The way to do things is to begin.”

–Horace Greely

Of course, it’s important to plan – to plan your day, to plan your week and even to plan your new year. (It’s probably not going to be possible to achieve ALL of your goals, your new year resolutions, without some form of planning.)

But planning only takes you so far. Action needs to get involved, too.

And that just means taking the first step…

So there you are, 7 free inspirational quotes and 7 of the most common new year resolutions.

Let’s hope you’re able to put these inspirational quotations into practice – this time, this year.

Let’s hope that these final, cutting words WILL NOT apply to you…

“Many people look forward to the new year for a new start on old habits.”

Ten Ways To Jump Start Your New Year Resolutions!

Time passes so quickly! Just a few short weeks ago we were coming off our holiday food, drink, spending, and party hangovers. We were also launching our New Year resolutions. Here we are, already into the second month of the new year. My biggest problem on a day-to-day basis – and probably yours, as well – is finding enough time to get everything done. Seems that society and our daily lives speed up, but things just never slow down, hence the battle to ‘get it all done’. If you made a resolution on January 1 and you’re struggling just a bit, or maybe you put it off until another day, month, or season, no worries. You can make and keep a resolution virtually any day of the year.

Equally important, keep in mind you don’t have to make your resolution a reality overnight. You have the power of time: 11 months remain in the year. One small step, one day at a time for one year can reap huge rewards! Consider these tips, as you ponder your next move:

Newyear

Get Organized. If you’re buried in paper and clutter it’s hard to motivate toward achieving a dream, resolution and daily goals. I like to do a top-to-bottom house cleaning three or four times each year, and definitely do a major cleaning right around the New Year. In addition to helping you to find things, maintain clarity, and keep your focus on daily goals, a thoroughly clean and organized house/office makes you feel great. If your organization project will take longer than a day or weekend, break it into small projects that you can tackle over a few weeks, a month, or perhaps a quarter – whatever works best for you.

Keep It Simple. Focus on just one major life-changing dream at at time. Turn your dream into a specific one-sentence resolution. Make that resolution a reality with small daily steps/goals. Take one small step at a time, one day at a time for one year. Don’t create a long unrealistic list of things that you think you ‘should do’, but know you ‘won’t do’. That’s a recipe for failure and broken promises. Tackle just one dream about which you have great passion, desire and interest.

Learn And Plan: Do your homework to learn the ‘who, what, when, where, why, and how’ that will enable you to build a plan that will take you from idea to achievement: fulfilling your dream, your resolution. Build an outline. Break large long-term goals into small daily steps that can be taken one at a time. Keep learning as you go. The research and learning never ends. There is always something new to learn.

Set Priorities: You can’t get it all done in one day, that’s not realistic. Know the next 10, 20, 30, 50, 100 daily goals that are necessary, set priorities, and tackle them one by one. Use your daily goals like building blocks. One success on top of another will generate enthusiasm, confidence, self esteem, motivation, and momentum. Your daily goals are like stairs to the stars. Keep climbing. Keep reaching. Each step will take you closer to capturing a handful of stardust.

Write It Down: A Daily Resolution Diary will help you to build a plan, track progress, create a timeline, measure milestones, and reward yourself for hard-won victories. Your Diary will also keep you organized and make daily and weekly Check-Ins a snap.

Do It Daily: Make Every Day New Year‘s Day. Make Every Day Count. Take action, one step at a time, one day at a time for one year. That approach removes unrealistic pressure to move mountains overnight. Be patient. The rewards will add up exponentially over time like money in the bank drawing interest.

Tell The World: Enlist your friends and family in your quest. Ask for their advice and support. Ask them to join you in daily activities! Start a blog and record your journey, or join a blogging community filled with people who share your dream. Join a club. Take a class. Plant Post-It notes at work and home as reminders. Wear your resolution on your T-shirt. Carry your resolution around on your coffee mug. Put it on your computer screen and your mouse pad. Focus on your goals each and every day. Most importantly, keep your eye on the ultimate outcome – what you stand to gain when you fullfill your dream, resolution and daily goals!

Be Flexible: Obstacles will appear like dandelions on a Spring day and ultimately interfere with the best-laid plans. You often will be Overtaken By Events (OBE). Plan for the obstacles and embrace them. Use them to build knowledge, experience, strength, and determination. Instead of feeling sorry for yourself, use obstacles to build self esteem, momentum and motivation by overcoming and beating them. Don’t dwell on them. Instead, handle them and move on to the next step!

Celebrate Your Successes: Give yourself a pat on the back! Be proud of your accomplishments, and large and small victories. Use them to fuel the fire of passion for your dream. Reward yourself often. Small pleasures for a job well done will keep you interested, enthusiastic and moving forward day after day.

Keep Your Eye On The Prize: Know your ultimate goal. Know what you want to achieve. Visualize what your dream, your resolution will look like at the end of the journey. Stay focused on the ‘brass ring’ and when you finally ‘grab it, hang on tight and take it to the next level’!

New Year Resolutions – Do They Really Work?

Do you remember that feeling at the beginning of a new school year starting with brand new school supplies? That sense of freshness and new beginnings as you open up the first page of an untouched notebook and hold a new sharp pointed pencil poised to make the first mark? Usually the first few pages of my notebook would have my best neatest writing, which then deteriorated as the time went on. My desire to do my best, reaching for higher standards of excellence dwindled as the day to day routines of daily living took me back to standards of mediocrity and just getting by.

The beginning of a new year is often the time when we reflect on the year that has past and see things that we would like to change and do differently. A new year represents a new start, a new chapter and a clean unwritten page in life. There is a desire to live better, reach new goals, and make a fresh start. We make New Year Resolutions and promise ourselves that this year we will do them. We summon up our will power and determination and step into the New Year with the greatest and sincerest of intentions.

Newyear

New Year Resolutions have become almost the joke of this season. It is well recognized that those well intentioned New Years resolutions often fail as quickly as they are made. One common resolution is the goal to lose weight by eating sensibly and exercise. It is the busiest time of year for Fitness Centers, but statistics have shown that new memberships are rarely kept up more than month or two. One thing that New Year resolutions do show is that good intentions are not sufficient to make permanent changes in our lives.

Why do most New Year Resolutions fail?

We are motivated by pleasure in life rather than pain. Many resolutions involve some kind of deprivation of pleasure whether it be eating, or stopping a bad habit. We know that although we enjoy our bad habits, their consequences are ultimately not beneficial for either our health or life. The desire for instant gratification for short term pleasure is far stronger than any mental logical sense of reason in most cases. We know in our head what we should do, but doing it when it opposes our immediate desires is tough.

Our mind is composed of two parts; the conscious and subconscious mind. Brain activity takes place through neurons. In one second of time the conscious mind uses two thousand neurons, and in that same second the subconscious mind uses four billion neurons. This means that every second there are two thousand neurons making conscious decisions and four billion neurons making subconscious decisions. Which part of your mind has the greatest control do you think?

The subconscious mind is trained by the constant repetition of the beliefs, values and lifestyle that you have taken and lived from an early age. It automatically follows the familiar and well trodden path of well ingrained thoughts, beliefs and behaviors. The subconscious operates from such a well established history that it responds automatically with learned responses and behavior. This is why it is so difficult to create new habits of thoughts and behaviours, the subconscious mind will always try to revert to old familiar way of doing things, because they have become so automatic. The conscious mind has a hard job to make permanent changes because of the power of those four billion neurons. It can be achieved, but it takes hard work by the conscious mind to retrain our subconscious mind.

It is said that you need to do something at least 30 times to create a new habit. For changes in life long learnt behaviors it can take far more than that. For example have you ever got in the car and driven to your destination, and not really remember the journey there. You have been driving using the learned behaviors of your subconscious mind, and your conscious mind has been thinking about something else. However if you were to drive in a different country whose custom is to drive on the other side of the road – your conscious mind would be working very hard to correct the learned and instinctive behavior of your subconscious mind. In fact the whole experience of driving on the other side of the road feels wrong and uncomfortable, and if you lose your concentration you could find yourself automatically going back to familiar patterns and become a road hazard!

Here are tips for working on those New Year‘s Resolutions:

Don’t expect instant results – it’s a process

Plan small attainable steps to your desired goal

Celebrate each successful step towards your goal and work on it until it feels automatic before progressing to the next

Don’t give up when you experience relapses and set backs

Review your new steps and goals several times daily.

Visualize what reaching your goal will look and feel like

Write down your steps and goals.

Find people who will support and encourage you on the way.

The History of New Years Resolutions

The tradition of the New Year‘s Resolutions goes all the way back to 153 B.C. Janus, a mythical king of early Rome was placed at the head of the calendar.

With two faces, Janus could look back on past events and forward to the future. Janus became the ancient symbol for resolutions and many Romans looked for forgiveness from their enemies and also exchanged gifts before the beginning of each year.

Newyear

The New Year has not always begun on January 1, and it doesn’t begin on that date everywhere today. It begins on that date only for cultures that use a 365-day solar calendar. January 1 became the beginning of the New Year in 46 B.C., when Julius Caesar developed a calendar that would more accurately reflect the seasons than previous calendars had.

The Romans named the first month of the year after Janus, the god of beginnings and the guardian of doors and entrances. He was always depicted with two faces, one on the front of his head and one on the back. Thus he could look backward and forward at the same time. At midnight on December 31, the Romans imagined Janus looking back at the old year and forward to the new.

The Romans began a tradition of exchanging gifts on New Year‘s Eve by giving one another branches from sacred trees for good fortune. Later, nuts or coins imprinted with the god Janus became more common New Year‘s gifts.

In the Middle Ages, Christians changed New Year‘s Day to December 25, the birth of Jesus. Then they changed it to March 25, a holiday called the Annunciation. In the sixteenth century, Pope Gregory XIII revised the Julian calendar, and the celebration of the New Year was returned to January 1.

The Julian and Gregorian calendars are solar calendars. Some cultures have lunar calendars, however. A year in a lunar calendar is less than 365 days because the months are based on the phases of the moon. The Chinese use a lunar calendar. Their new year begins at the time of the first full moon (over the Far East) after the sun enters Aquarius- sometime between January 19 and February 21.

Although the date for New Year‘s Day is not the same in every culture, it is always a time for celebration and for customs to ensure good luck in the coming year.

Ancient New Years

The celebration of the New Year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, Babylonians celebrated the beginning of a new year on what is now March 23, although they themselves had no written calendar.

Late March actually is a logical choice for the beginning of a new year. It is the time of year that spring begins and new crops are planted. January 1, on the other hand, has no astronomical nor agricultural significance. It is purely arbitrary.

The Babylonian New Year celebration lasted for eleven days. Each day had its own particular mode of celebration, but it is safe to say that modern New Year‘s Eve festivities pale in comparison.

The Romans continued to observe the New Year on March 25, but their calendar was continually tampered with by various emperors so that the calendar soon became out of synchronization with the sun.

In order to set the calendar right, the Roman senate, in 153 BC, declared January 1 to be the beginning of the New Year. But tampering continued until Julius Caesar, in 46 BC, established what has come to be known as the Julian Calendar. It again established January 1 as the New Year. But in order to synchronize the calendar with the sun, Caesar had to let the previous year drag on for 445 days.

Global Good Luck Traditions

With New Year‘s upon us, here’s a look at some of the good luck rituals from around the world. They are believed to bring good fortune and prosperity in the coming year.

AUSTRIA – The suckling pig is the symbol for good luck for the new year. It’s served on a table decorated with tiny edible pigs. Dessert often consists of green peppermint ice cream in the shape of a four-leaf clover.

ENGLAND – The British place their fortunes for the coming year in the hands of their first guest. They believe the first visitor of each year should be male and bearing gifts. Traditional gifts are coal for the fire, a loaf for the table and a drink for the master. For good luck, the guest should enter through the front door and leave through the back. Guests who are empty-handed or unwanted are not allowed to enter first.

WALES – At the first toll of midnight, the back door is opened and then shut to release the old year and lock out all of its bad luck. Then at the twelfth stroke of the clock, the front door is opened and the New Year is welcomed with all of its luck.

HAITI – In Haiti, New Year‘s Day is a sign of the year to come. Haitians wear new clothing and exchange gifts in the hope that it will bode well for the new year.

SICILY – An old Sicilian tradition says good luck will come to those who eat lasagna on New Year‘s Day, but woe if you dine on macaroni, for any other noodle will bring bad luck.

SPAIN – In Spain, when the clock strikes midnight, the Spanish eat 12 grapes, one with every toll, to bring good luck for the 12 months ahead.

PERU – The Peruvian New Year‘s custom is a spin on the Spanish tradition of eating 12 grapes at the turn of the year. But in Peru, a 13th grape must be eaten to assure good luck.

GREECE – A special New Year‘s bread is baked with a coin buried in the dough. The first slice is for the Christ child, the second for the father of the household and the third slice is for the house. If the third slice holds the coin, spring will come early that year.

JAPAN – The Japanese decorate their homes in tribute to lucky gods. One tradition, kadomatsu, consists of a pine branch symbolizing longevity, a bamboo stalk symbolizing prosperity, and a plum blossom showing nobility.

CHINA – For the Chinese New Year, every front door is adorned with a fresh coat of red paint, red being a symbol of good luck and happiness. Although the whole family prepares a feast for the New Year, all knives are put away for 24 hours to keep anyone from cutting themselves, which is thought to cut the family’s good luck for the next year.

UNITED STATES – The kiss shared at the stroke of midnight in the United States is derived from masked balls that have been common throughout history. As tradition has it, the masks symbolize evil spirits from the old year and the kiss is the purification into the new year.

NORWAY – Norwegians make rice pudding at New Year‘s and hide one whole almond within. Guaranteed wealth goes to the person whose serving holds the lucky almond.

Chinese New Year

Except for a very few number of people who can keep track of when the Chinese New Year should be, the majority of the Chinese today have to rely on a typical Chinese calendar to tell it. Therefore, you cannot talk of the Chinese New Year without mentioning the Chinese calendar at first.

A Chinese calendar consists of both the Gregorian and lunar-solar systems, with the latter dividing a year into twelve month, each of which is in turn equally divided into thirty- nine and a half days. The well-coordinated dual system calendar reflects the Chinese ingenuity.

There is also a system that marks the years in a twelve-year cycle, naming each of them after an animal such as Rat, Ox, Tiger, Hare, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Boar. People born in a particular year are believed to share some of the personalities of that particular animal.

7 Keys To Transforming New Year Resolutions Into Reality

For many of us, New Year can be a depressing time – be that looking back on plans that did not come to fruition or it being an anti climax to the great festivities of Christmas. New Year marks a time when many of us consider our achievements in the year that is ending but all too often our minds turn to “what might have been” and what we have not achieved. These thoughts then become the foundation from where we develop our New Year resolutions. What we often forget is that New Year is in fact just another day. If we are looking to change our behaviour or attitude towards something, why do we wait to the 1 January to do so? If we really want that change to take place we can do so at any time of year.

This change in perspective can enable us to embrace New Year in a much more relaxed way. Many of us write a list of New Year resolutions, but it’s rare to find anyone upholding that resolve into February. Most often, New Year resolutions are about areas of self improvement for example, losing weight, stopping smoking, working less hours, spending more time with the family etc etc. For us to make such changes, we not only must see the need to change, but have a huge burning desire to change AND have the support and encouragement around us to do so – be that through support of family, friends or mentors. Behavioural change can take at least 21 days to become a habit and an even longer time before you embed the change so that it becomes as natural as breathing and sustainable even under pressure.

New Year’s Resolutions or Commitments?

New Year‘s resolutions are more often than not, promises (to yourself) not kept.

For decades, making a list of New Year‘s resolutions has been the IN thing to do around the holidays. How many of us have previously resolved to lose weight, smoke less, drink less, gamble less, save more money, learn a new skill, exercise more or spend more time with the family? Most of us have only hoped to be able do some of these things in past years. Most of us have also returned to our old ways by no later than the second week of January. Is this not true?

Newyear

Making New Year‘s resolutions is generally a waste of time. Why not -instead- make a commitment with yourself that you have a much better chance of keeping? By their earned reputation, resolutions are expected to fail. Ever get together with several couples and resolve to plan a cruise with the whole group for later in the year? How often has that kind of candid and casual “wouldn’t it be nice” resolution ever come off? It seemed like a good idea at the party and if it doesn’t happen, so what? It is like most resolutions that we make. They sound very cool at the time, but usually end up going nowhere for reasons we cannot always point to. Usually, we can live awhile longer with the consequences of such failed resolutions. No big deal.

New Year’s Resolutions or Commitments?

Face it, if you don’t lose weight – next year – you can live very happily as an overweight person among an entire nation of overweight people. If you don’t save more money – next year – you can join the rest of the nation living paycheck to paycheck. But, if you don’t get your business house in order, you can risk having to close your doors – FOREVER. And, then what will happen?

From a marketing standpoint, if you make any New Year‘s commitments – for next year – they should be related to strengthening your business. This is a commitment you cannot afford to break, because smart marketing brings you more customers. More customers bring you the revenue you need to keep moving forward.

Smart marketing begins at your front door. On the Web, your front door is your website. If you have an ugly front door, people may not come knocking. Your website must be professional-looking and appealing to consumers visiting it for the very first time. You only get one chance to make a favorable first impression.

When was the last time you spent any quality time reviewing your website for possible upgrades or replacement? If it has been more than four to six months, it is probably time to revisit it again with a very critical eye. Does it still measure up? Did it ever measure up? These are the questions you must ask yourself and – by all means – solicit other opinions from family, friends and customers.

A business is a dynamic entity. It is constantly evolving and most of the considered changes involve your customers. Your products and services may change. Your pricing and payment terms often change, too. MUST HAVE applications and new technologies emerge or become increasingly important to your business’ efficiencies and ultimate success. For example, PayPal is so much faster than the US Postal Service these days – especially when it comes to getting paid quickly. So, why not consider an E-commerce package for your website? That is – of course – if you do not already have one installed?

If you are not confident that local consumers are finding you ahead of your nearest competition, search engine optimization is another area that you may need to delve into. Perhaps, you should enlist the help of an experienced SEO consultant. Is there anything worse than being a wonderful yet, largely unknown business?

Rather than offer you an extensive list of the many criteria a perfect website should include (and probably scare you away), I would much rather have you make ONE very simple New Year‘s commitment. ONE commitment that I know you can easily keep. ONE commitment that I also know will lead you to a progressive and effective strategic marketing plan to help your business succeed.

If you make no other New Year‘s resolutions – this year – you owe it to yourself and to your business to make one New Year‘s Eve commitment. After the ball drops and all the college football bowl games have been played, sit down at your computer station and carefully review your website, as if you were a prospective customer of your business. At first glance and as you progress through the web pages what do you think about it? Be honest with yourself? Is it all that it can be? What might make it a better website?

Are you prepared to keep your commitment to improve your business website? If this were ONLY a New Year‘s resolution, you could likely get away with doing nothing at all. Face it, if you don’t do anything to improve your website and your business marketing – next year – you ‘ll just be one of the more than 50% of all new business that fail in their first few years of operation. So, don’t just resolve to do something you really need to commit to doing. Resolving instead of committing is like bringing a knife to a gunfight. Just saying.

New Year Resolutions… For Fish!

Sure, every year it is the same ol’ thing–fishermen sit down crack open a bottle of Hamms, and rattle off the same resolutions they have been rattling off for years.

Do more fishing, learn to actually tie a fly-correctly- or break down and take that trip of a lifetime you have been promising yourself for the last three decades.

Newyear

For the fish, our little water dwelling friends, it is a little different.

A Christmas Cornucopia Review

A Christmas Cornucopia Overview

A Christmas Cornucopia is a collection of new, inspired interpretations of 11 traditional festive songs, rounded out by a new Lennox composition, Universal Child. The music on the album was mostly played by Lennox, in collaboration with co producer Mike Stevens, and recorded in his southwest London studio – at the bottom of his garden. But to achieve the resonance and vibrancy that were integral to Lennox’s ideas for these re-energized reboots, the pair also worked with a 30-piece orchestra at Pinewood Studios. And they travelled further afield too: to South Africa, to record with the African Children’s Choir, a remarkable organization with which impassioned campaigner and activist Lennox has long had a relationship. A Christmas Cornucopia is no sweetly packaged selection box. As befits its title, it offers an abundance of songs – drawn from British, French and German traditions – and a host of ideas. On Lullay Lullay, “a lullaby I’ve known for years and the darkest carol I think,” Lennox draws direct links between the Nativity and the plight of Africa’s child soldiers. “Lullay Lullay alludes to the killing of first-born boy children by King Herod… and going back more deeply into the story of the song, I kept getting images of child soldiers in my head…The violation of children is endemic in many so places. Even though this carol is ancient, the brutality of the subject matter is just as relevant today.

Do they get together and crack open a nice warm can of “Mayflys”, (from the land of murky baubles!) and swear off salmon eggs for the rest of their lives?

Let’s take a look at what’s transpiring beneath the riffles as we head into the new year…..

“Hey Buck, looks like we made it another year out here in Snagville.”

“Yeah, it sure has been a rough year–Finley.”

“Tell me about it. I’ve kept having these recurring lip pains all year, seems to happen every few weeks, whenever I eat too much.”

“I got the same problem. Next year I swear I am going to lose some weight, stop eating so much meat and cheese. Especially worms those things are loaded with calories.”

“You know Buck, I heard about this new fad diet a few of the guys have been trying, they say it works real good.”

“Oh yeah, what is it Finley?”

“It’ called the ‘Swim-Fast’ diet.”

“SWIM-FAST, that’s not new, that’ been around for years. I tried that back in 99-just wound up using it to wash down my salmon eggs, and gained nine ounces.”

“I even tried the ‘AtFins’ diet–the one where you eat nothing but caddis flys– but my cholesterol went up so high, I started overproducing my Omega-3′s.”

“Whoa, that can be dangerous.”

“The best one I found was this diet they call the ‘South Beach’ diet–but our river runs north to south– so I never could find a south beach.”

“That can be a problem. Hey, pass me the clam dip.”

“Maybe we should just excercise more?”

“No way- I knew this fish named Sal, I think his last name was Monella–anyway, he decided to go on this big excercise ‘adventure’, stayed away three years. Came back rock hard, bigger than I ever remember him, croaked a few months after getting back.”

“Wow, that sucks.”

“It wasn’t pretty either, he got all white and sore looking, then just went belly up.”

“There was some rumours he was using FGH-you know- the Fish Growth Hormone.”

“Nah, my cousin knew Sal, said he just really grew on his big ocean adventure.”

“Guess exercise isn’t all that good then–hey, try this algae it’s delicious.”

“Ya know Finley, it seems like a lot of our friends have been disappearing lately.”

“I know Buck, they got that same shooting pain in their lip–seemed like they were in a real hurry to get out of here after that–and then they never came back.”

“Friends can be fickle.”

“Yeah, they come and go–but new ones always seem to show up.”

“We got any more “Mayflys”?”

“You just drank the last one.”

“Shoot, I ‘ve also got do a little less drinking in 2006. My wife won’t spawn with me anymore-says I always smell like a drowned worm.”

“I hear ya man. Wife’s always on my dorsal about that kinda stuff too.”

“Anyway, I love ya man–at least you and I will always be best fins. Right?”

“Easy dude, I think you may have had one to many ‘Mayflys’. You’re getting sappy on me.”

“Well, the waters getting pretty brown Finley. Must be getting pretty close to the New Years.”

“Water’s rising too, Buck. I bet your right.”

” Here’s to a great 2006 Finley.”

“Happy New Years, Buck.”

“Guess I’ll head home, back to ‘cut bank’”

“Buck, you’re in no condition to swim I’ll call ya cab.”

“Thanks, Fin”………………..
