Why Do People Not Keep Their New Year’s Resolution?

Every New Year millions of people make a resolution to get rid of an unwanted behaviour or introduce a positive new behaviour into their lives. The most popular resolutions are improving finances, losing weight, healthier eating, stopping smoking, increasing exercise, improving education or career and cutting down on drinking.

Unfortunately, for over a quarter of those people their good intentions will have come to nothing by the end of the week and others will give up within a couple of months.

Newyear

So why is it so difficult to keep a new year‘s resolution and why do so many people make the same resolution year after year?

Why Do People Not Keep Their New Year’s Resolution?

Well, the good news is that in a 1998 US survey 60% of people who had stuck to a resolution had taken more than one attempt. If you fail in your attempt don’t give up because the information below should help to improve your chances of success.

There are two things working against you when you make a resolution.

Firstly, it’s much easier to continue with your current behaviour. People tend to be creatures of habit and find it difficult to change, especially if it’s something that they enjoy. Once something has become a habit you do it without even thinking about it. This can be helpful in a lot of situations as there are so many things you do every day without thinking about them, but it’s not helpful if you’ve created a habit that you don’t want.

Smokers will often automatically light up when they pick up the phone or when they have a drink in their hand because they associate those situations with smoking. Children who have been brought up to eat everything on their plate often still do the same as adults because it was drummed into them at an early age.

Secondly, the benefits of the resolution aren’t usually immediate so it’s difficult to maintain enthusiasm. The resolution you have made probably involves reducing or removing an activity that you get pleasure from and replacing it with something that initially appears unpleasant. When you have had a long day you know you feel more comfortable curled up in front of the TV rather than starting a new exercise regime. Resisting the chocolate bar or extra beer is not easy when you know how lovely it will taste. Socialising with friends gives more immediate pleasure than spending time looking for a new job or studying.

Here are some ways to get over these two problems and increase your chances of keeping your new year‘s resolution this year.

Start off by analysing the behaviour you want to change. It needs to be something that you want to do for yourself, not something that other people think would be good for you. That will increase your motivation.

Think about what you are currently doing (or not doing) that you want to change. What is your current habit or behaviour giving you? Think about what you would miss most if you changed your current behaviour. Can you just modify your current behaviour so you keep the benefits whilst still getting rid of the bad parts or do you need a complete change?

Then think about the driving force behind your resolution. Why do you want to make this change in your life? What will be the benefit to you? Think about how your life will be with this resolution in place. Write it down, draw it or tell someone about it. Make it real to yourself so you know that you do want it. Keep reminding yourself of that new lifestyle every day as it will make your motivation stronger and make the change easier.

Finally, think about ways of altering what you do so that habits don’t have the chance to pop up. If you are changing your diet then make sure there are no snacks close at hand or change your route home so you don’t walk past the takeaway shop. If you are stopping smoking think about alternative ways of taking a break or change your morning routine so you are doing something else when you would have had your first cigarette of the day. If you are saving money then make a shopping list so you don’t buy any unnecessary extras or make a new ritual of putting spare change in a jar every night.

It takes about four to six weeks to create a new habit so soon you will be automatically doing the things that decided in your new year‘s resolution.

My New Year Resolution For 2010

Very similar to most people. The clock strikes 12 and I begin the exercise of making plans and promises for the New Year to come. I take the time to consider all of those habits and actions that I would want to do better in the coming year. In true perspective, I am actually often seeking resolution for a few of those resolutions that I did not accomplish in the passing year.

Though my intentions for the coming year are honorable, my process is lacking a very valuable ingredient. I am planning for the New Year without embracing wisdom and understanding of why the habits and actions of my passing year require resolution, when my intentions were just as honorable last New Years Eve.

Newyear

I am sure that I am not alone in this exercise. It would not be a lengthy task for any of us to think of many reasons why the resolutions of our passing year, still require resolution.

Could it be the:

1. lack of money

2. lack of time

3. lack of resource

4. lack of inspiration

5. lack of motivation

6. lack of support

While each of these reasons are supported by their own initiatives. None of these reasons have their own ability to manifest enough of its own power to control your life. They all require your permission to have any control over your life. Without making the conscious decision of allocating wisdom and understanding of what actions we took and did not take this passing year, we are encouraging history to repeat itself. If we are not careful in protecting where our resources are allocated, we can very easily enter into a repetitive spiral of incomplete accomplishments.

There are people that would encourage the act of moving forward while enforcing the words “let the past be the past”. I challenge that way of thinking by asking simple questions like, “What is it about the actions of your past that you would choose to forget, because someday those actions of tomorrow will also be your past? Are you hoping to forget those too?”.

On this New Year, I’d like to try something different. When the clock strikes 12, I am going to only think of those things in my life in which I am grateful. I believe that gratitude is the path to clarity when seeking resolution. At the end of my exercise of gratitude, I will then begin to allocate the wisdom needed to fully understand the actions and results of my passing year. In that understanding I will be able to implement a solution for the New Year, I will not be re-solving anything in the year of 2011.

I believe that we all have the capacity to approach the New Year in way that offers productivity and solution…

What are your thoughts about the New Year? I’d like to know…

Strategies to Keep Your New Year’s Resolution

A New Year resolution basically comes down to deciding to change something for the better. It is a commitment people make as the year is coming to an end, to usher in the New Year with renewed vigor. Keep all the old stuff with the previous year. However, New Year resolutions are very hard to keep. Below are some strategies that should prepare you as you make your resolutions and be able to see it through

- Make it early

- Develop a plan

- Start small

- Tell people about it

- Don’t cheat yourself

- Take time off

Newyear

Make it early

Strategies to Keep Your New Year’s Resolution

Most resolutions people make are centered on giving something up or doing something better. The best way to start with your resolution is to start right away. Do n not wait for the year to come to an end. The reason is that you might not be aware for what it is going to take to succeed in your new plan. The best approach is to start early whenever you decide to do what you want for example losing some weight or to smile at people more. Do not wait for the end of the year, start right away. What this does is you test the proof of the concept. Is your strategy for what you want to achieve feasible? Do you have the time for this or should you try another approach. By the time January 1 rolls by you would have tweaked your resolution to fit your way of life which makes the resolution sustainable.

Develop a plan

Nothing beats having a plan. Once you have a plan, write it down and you are half way done. The good thing about having a plan is that you know what you want to achieve, the how and the when. You can take it a step further for success by sticking it on your mirror or inside your wardrobe. Some place private that you must visit every day and where you must see you plan to either reinforce your efforts or serve as a reminder to make an effort.

Start Small

Big ideas are good, but you have to start them piece by piece to be able to keep focused and not get overwhelmed, and then give up. If your New Year resolution is to lose weight, do not try to do too much at once. For example, start by working for 10 minutes and then 20 and see how you respond to that. Doing like an hour walk or run might cause a lot of stress to your body, since it is not used to it and might cause you to give up.

Tell people about it

The best way to stick to your plan is to tell people about it, especially nosy people. They will keep you in check until it bothers on annoying. With the combination of your written down plans and goals, the constant nagging from the people you told, should all come together to be a positive reminder for you.

Don’t cheat yourself

This is the worst thing you can do to your efforts. A friend who was trying to lose weight invited me to work out with her. After a few weeks I told her that I had improved a lot. Lost a few pounds and increased my stamina. She on the other hand had not lost any weight and seemed to have gained. I later discovered that she had a discreet little refrigerator in her bedroom and indulged herself silly every night.

Take time off

Keeping to a new year‘s resolution is like having a full time job. At your job once in a while you are given some days off to recharge your batteries. Once in a while take time off from your resolution and just relax and clear you head. If you’re losing weight, grab that chocolate cake you have been craving for months. It definitely will feel good and will give you the energy to continue. Only remember to do an extra 20 minutes on thread mill.

New Year Resolution Lose Weight – Get the Shape You Desire Fast

Some of us are perfectionists when it comes to our physical appearance, yet we think nothing of our health and the shape of our body. The New Year is here and it is time to make our traditional New Year resolutions. If one of your resolutions is to lose weight – and keep it off, then we should be more concerned with what we eat and get the shape we desire fast. We are more concerned with how we look to others, than how we look at our health and well-being. What is the answer? Spend more time in front of the mirror and decide now how to get the shape you desire fast. Here are some simple tips to help you lose weight and live healthily throughout the New Year.

Drink enough water and lose weight

To lose weight in the New Year should not be a difficult resolution to keep. Drinking enough water every day will help you lose weight and get the shape you desire fast. If you do not have the simple habit of drinking enough water every day, your body will be storing water instead of flushing out toxins. Your body water retention will lead to excess weight. You should learn to drink 8 glasses of water every day to give you a feeling of fullness and help suppress your appetite.

Learn to eat more slowly

If learn to eat more slowly you will eat about 60 fewer calories per meal every day. Instead of rushing to eat your breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, reduce the speed for each meal and you will be able to save 180 daily calories – that amounts to 6,300 at the end of five weeks. The 6,300 calories you save will amount to losing about 2 pounds of your present weight.

To lose weight in the New Year, Do not skip your breakfast

If you used to think that skipping your breakfast will help you lose weight, you may be in for a shocker! Studies show that breakfast rich in protein and fat will help you to lose weight and have more energy. When you skip your breakfast, your body’s metabolic rate slows down and your blood sugar drops. As a result, you become hungry and have less energy.

Eat about 5 healthy small meals every day

To lose weight in the New Year and keep your New Year resolution, ensure you keep to the simple rule of eating 5 healthy small meals every day. Eating small healthy meals frequently every day keeps you from getting hungry and overeating at your next meal.

Adopt a balanced approach to your diet

To get the shape that you desire fast in the New Year, ensure your diet consist of a balance of organic sources of lean protein, complex carbohydrates, whole grains, legumes, nuts, fruits, and vegetables. Instead of eating white rice and pasta, eat brown rice, bulgur, millet, or buckwheat. Let this form part of your New Year resolution to lose weight in a healthy manner.

Eat more vegetables like broccoli, kale, spinach, and asparagus. Eliminate candy, sugar, soda, and all simple sugars from your diet. Eating excess sugar will result in fats being stored in your body, leading to weight gain. Also, reduce the consumption of keep dairy products which are high in saturated fat. Avoid fatty foods, processed or fried foods.

Engage in physical activities

Change your lifestyle during the New Year and engage in more physical activities that are fun to do. The main cause of weight gain is inactivity. Physical activity is the key to speeding up your metabolism and burning excess calories. You can lose 2 pounds per week by just engaging in enough physical activities. One way to be physically active is to walk the dog or walk to the nearby grocery shop. Walk as often and as long as you can. Always take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Step outside during your break at work and take a walk to eat your lunch instead of a ride. You can commit to take a walk 30 minutes in the morning or 30 minutes in the early evening.

Remember, 1 pound equals about 3,500 calories. So, to lose one pound you will need to burn 3,500 calories more than what you take in every week. To lose 2 pounds per week means you will be burning 7,000 calories more than what you consume each week. To do this you do not have to deprive your body of calories by not eating.

If you deprive your body of food in the New Year, you will be sabotaging your efforts to lose weight and keep your New Year resolution. The following things will happen:

You will burn muscle and not fat. You do not want to lose muscle, you need it.

You will not have enough energy to do your workout and other physical activities.

Since you will be losing muscle you will burn fewer calories when you are not active.

To successfully lose weight takes time, and you need to take the time to do it or you will become frustrated. Be patient.

So what is your New Year Resolution? To lose weight and get the shape you desire fast and keep to your plans to achieve your desired weight goal.

New Year Resolution Tips – Maintain Accountability With Weekly Check-Ins!

If you are pursuing a dream, New Year Resolution, or series of daily goals, one surefire way to make consistent progress is to write things down and review your strategy and accomplishments on a regular basis – at least once a week. If you have a New Year Resolution, or dream that is simmering on the back burner because you lack accountability and a strategy, why not get a jump on the New Year? Get moving right now and take your first step toward daily action. In just two months, on January 1, 2009, well-intentioned people will draft a list of new habits they feel they should cultivate to promote positive change in their lives – get more exercise, lose weight, stop smoking, and pay off debt, for instance. The first mistake they make is crafting a list with too many resolutions. The second mistake is that the list does not contain resolutions that generate sustainable enthusiasm, passion, interest, and desire. Those mistakes can become a ‘thing of the past’ with the right resolution, system and attitude.

If you want to make 2009 different – a year filled with accomplishment, success, joy, and reward – pursue just one dream, make a promise to yourself to act daily, build a written plan, and ‘Check In weekly’. Hold yourself accountable one week at a time. Personally, I check in every single day. It helps me to know what steps I need to take today, tomorrow and the next day. It also helps me to continuously brainstorm new ideas and build a strong long-range strategy. Most importantly, it keeps me accountable and on track with my daily and weekly goals. I constantly track and evaluate the goals I have completed and the goals that are beckoning from the horizon.

If you are ready to rock and roll on 2009 (a bit early), start with this simple formula for success: Begin with a grand dream such as, “I would love to exercise every day for good health”. Turn that dream into a one sentence resolution that clearly states what you plan to achieve and why – such as, “I resolve to exercise for 30-minutes each day by walking, swimming, working out with weights, and doing Yoga, so that I can maintain my ideal weight, be healthy, happy, and fit!” Then make that dream and resolution a reality by building a long and short-range plan that enables you to achieve at least one goal – take one small step – each and every day. If you’re not sure what to do next, consider these five easy steps: 1) Dare To Dream; 2) Decide; 3) Define; 4) Develop A Plan, and; 5) Do It Daily.

Fulfilling dreams and keeping New Year Resolutions does not have to be an impossible dream. Each year your list of resolutions doesn’t have to languish – unfulfilled – somewhere on your desk. The key to changing this negative annual ritual is to ‘change what you are doing’, your approach, and your attitude. Don’t make 10 resolutions that you feel are ‘good ideas’. Instead, choose one dream that fills you with enormous passion, interest and desire. Don’t flounder because you don’t have a system. Instead, choose a simple, common sense system, like the five steps that I list above. Then get moving. Don’t procrastinate by waiting for just the right moment. That moment may never arrive. Make a commitment and take action every single day whether you feel like it or not – one small step at a time, one day at a time. Above all be accountable to yourself, your dream, resolution and daily goals by checking in at least once each week.

Here are three good reasons why you should ‘Check In’ every week (not once a month or once a year):

Memory Is Not Perfect: If you don’t create a written plan, timeline and firm deadlines – and evaluate them regularly – how will you identify progress, obstacles, or next steps?
Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind: If you don’t regularly review your plan, timeline, deadlines, and progress – action is easily delayed. You put off until tomorrow, what you should do today because your strategy is not ‘literally’ front and center every day and every week.
Someday, Someday, Someday Syndrome Rules Supreme If You Are Not Careful: It’s hard to keep saying “Someday, I’ll do that” when a goal sits on your list week after week, check-in after check-in. Keep the Someday Syndrome at bay by evaluating obstacles, progress and victories regularly. ‘Wins’ inspire motivation, momentum, and more victories. Admit it when procrastination is one of your obstacles and take steps to begin accomplishing your goals, starting with the easiest most achievable goal first, and working your through the harder goals one at a time.

Remember: I Resolve To Achieve My New Year Resolutions, One Resolution, One Day At A Time For One Year. It’s your choice. Do it today. Turn your resolution into reality in five simple, common sense steps: Dare To Dream, Decide, Define, Develop A Plan, and Do It Daily. Make your resolution a permanent Lifetime Resolution, something that’s with you for good! Above all, Be A Resolutionista, someone who makes resolutions, keeps resolutions, and enjoys the journey! Make Every Day New Year’s Day. Make Every Day Count. Let’s Go For It!
