Be honest: how much fun do you really expect to wring out of the holidays this year? With endless presents to buy and decorations to put up, there can be precious little time to get down. That’s where Christmas Is 4 Ever comes in handy. If you can find room in your busy schedule to gather a few close friends for mingling and merrymaking, this disc is probably the most cost-effective alternative to a DJ around. Nearly everyone who’s anyone has covered a Christmas song or two in their career, but Bootsy Collins is one of the few to truly make the arrangements his own (even going so far as to rename holiday standards in a funky style). Here, he combines his outrageous style with a touch of hip-hop, plenty of shout-outs, and well-wishing phone messages featuring friends from Buckethead to (the late) Roger Troutman (of Zapp fame) to George Clinton himself. In fact, Collins, who may best be known to some for his work with Clinton and James Brown, isn’t shy about inviting friends to the party, including Snoop Dogg on “Happy Holidaze,” Charlie Daniels on “Sleigh Ride,” and Candis Cheatham turning in lead vocals on “Santa’s Coming” (a.k.a. “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town”), the track that arguably does the best job intertwining danceability–and a little humor–with traditional Christmas cheer. Longtime fans will be pleased by contributions from Funkadelic alums, including Blackbyrd McKnight, Bernie Worrell, and Bootsy’s brother, Catfish. Novices, meanwhile, may find this album a gateway to non-seasonal ’70s classics. There are many themes you can use when crafting your own holiday gift baskets. However, the list below contains some traditional gift basket ideas as well as a few for special friends on your gift list. You can get most of your crafting supplies at local stores like Hobby Lobby, or if you shop on the Internet, simply type “gift basket supplies”.
Let’s start with one of my favorites to share with your inner family and close friends.
1) The Traditional Christmas Gift Basket:
Fill your basket with hot apple cider mix large mugs, homemade Christmas ornaments, a letter or poem on why Christmas is important to you, matching mittens, hat and scarf (or, depending on your climate you could substitute sunglasses, sun block lotion, a cool destination theme cap) some mistletoe and or other fragrant scents. You could even include a popular Christmas music CD, and for a super nice touch… some home made Christmas cookies – with the recipe included.
2) Christmas Decorating Gift Basket
Fill a basket with nativity set, assorted Christmas ornaments (store bought, but better if hand-made by you,) decorative lights, homemade candles or seasonal candles from your local craft store and a little traditional mistletoe and holly
3) Coffee Lovers Gift basket
Fill a basket with gourmet coffees, coffee mugs, novels, or books on coffee regions and making processes, dark chocolates, and a decorative bookmark that you make yourself)
4) Chocolate Lover’s Gift Basket
Fill a basket with, chocolate cookies (home baked is best,) chocolate bonbons, chocolate sauces, chocolate syrup, chocolate dipped coffee spoons and for a special touch wrap them in cellophane with a bow, hot chocolate mix, chocolate covered coffee beans, chocolate flavored coffee beans and some chocolate recipes from around the world
5) Christmas Survival Kit
Spray paint a basket white, then stencil the International Red Cross symbol on each side. Fill the basket with Tylenol – to take away the headache of overdoing, Tea – to calm, relax, and soothe away the tension, peppermints – to settle the tummy from overindulging, Slimfast – to kick off the diet you will need to start, pocket date book – to track all of the ‘to do’s, CD that includes soothing quiet music to listen to while wrapping gifts, tape – to use to wrap the gifts because you forgot to buy any, a package of gift tags that you made, your favorite quick and easy yummy cookie cookie recipe and last, but not least include some nice bath oil or bubble bath to soothe the weary body
6) Faraway Grandparent (or relative) Gift basket
Fill a basket with children’s artwork, gifts made by the kids, frames for family pictures (let the kids buy plain wooden frames and decorate them with stickers,) videos of the family, a long-distance calling card. Extras: fill out the basket with candy, coffee, tea, biscuits, Christmas ornaments, candles, etc. Include printed notes from the kids with “why I love you Grandma/Pa sentiments)
7) Golf Lover’s Gift Basket
For the golfer, fill a basket or a golf bag with golf tees, golf balls, a baseball cap, sunscreen, score cards, a small towel, a can cooler to keep a can of pop or beer cold. A nice touch is to personalize the towel or baseball cap (you can stitch on them, use fabric paints, etc.)
Fisherman’s Gift Basket
Find a large basket or, use a tackle box and fill with assorted lures, leaders, long nose fishing pliers, gloves, guide to local fishing, DVD’s on fishing tournaments, and gift certificate for a rod or reel
9) Baby Boomer’s Gift Basket
Fill a basket with books and magazines on men or women’s health issues, a variety of herbal teas, skin care lotions for maturing skin, hair care products with herbal scents, skin care accessories such as exotic sponges, brushes and loofahs, humorous coffee mugs, 60′s CD’s of great groups like the Beatles and of course… humorous articles on aging
10) Father/ Mother Gift basket
Fill a basket with subscription to his/her favorite magazine, favorite cologne/perfume, comfy warm slippers, a handmade coupon book… i.e., (take the day off Dad/Mom…I’ll mow the lawn this time, wash the car, run errands, paint a room, etc.,) a gift certificate to his favorite sports shop favorite cookies or treat, a personal letter (in your own handwriting) telling him why you love and what you admire about him/her, favorite popcorn spices, favorite movie, a nice picture frame (with the picture of the family in it)
OK! There you have it. But Wait! Here’s your bonus! Just kidding… I guess I’m watching too many infomercials. Your going to get several more great gift basket ideas, just because the Holiday season is all about giving. Here are two more great homemade Christmas gift basket ideas.

Fill a briefcase with a Daytimer, business card holder (one for the wallet, one for the desktop,) pen and pencil set, business newspaper subscription, emergency shoe polish travel kit, reference books like a new updated dictionary, CD of business forms, coffee mug with gift certificate to Starbucks, etc.
Idea #2! Exerciser’s Gift basket
Fill a tote bag or backpack with microfiber towels, water bottle, workout DVD or magazines, power bars, sports drinks, sports socks, headband, and for a really good boss… a trial spa or gym membership
Take these Christmas gift basket ideas, mix them up and use them any way that makes sense to you. Just remember one thing. Everyone loves to receive a personalized gift basket. You don’t have to wait for Christmas or any other holiday. Just sit down and organize your ideas for each person you’ll be giving a basket to. Many times you’ll get a break by purchasing in bulk. Use this to your advantage and don’t go shopping and buy on impulse. You’ll end up spending more than you planed; become a smart shopper this season.

I put together a list of the top ten hot Christmas toys for this year so you can spend more time enjoying the last month of 2011 and less worrying about whether you are the buying toys that kids really want.

Almost everything Monster High related is going to be popular this Christmas, but the dolls will be the best sellers! Specifically the Monster High Abbey Bominable and Toralei Stripe Dolls since they are newer and a little harder to find.
#3 Air Swimmers This is a clever new type of remote-controlled vehicle by William Mark Corporation. There are two designs available, the shark and clown fish. The Air Swimmers use helium and are powered by four triple A batteries. They are designed to stay inflated for several weeks and “swim” through the air easily. This a fun change from the typical remote-controlled car or plane. Indoor use only though.
#4 Lite Sprites by Wowwee
These dolls and accessories use color and light to express their moods and feelings. Each sprite has a unique personality and purpose and they all comprise the Sprite Sisterhood. There is a Tree of Life accessory from which the individual sprites can hang from. So I suggest pairing the tree plus one or two sprites if the recipient doesn’t own any other Lite Sprite toys. There are plenty of other accessories available if they do, like the wand and various play sets.
#5 Hot Wheels Wall Tracks These are car tracks that you can attach to the walls. This is the latest change to the standard Hot Wheels floor racing tracks. I give them credit for coming up with something very different instead of just adding yet another loop. You can buy the starter set or a specific track set. The sets can be used alone or connected to the other wall tracks to create a larger race course. Don’t worry about the walls, Hot Wheels is using 3M Command Strips to attach the tracks so your paint or wallpaper won’t be destroyed. At least not by the 3M strips anyway.
#6 Sing and Glow Rapunzel This doll is based on the Disney movie, Tangled, that came out earlier this year. Rapunzel’s hair would glow when she sang a certain song. Just like the movie, the doll Rapunzel lights up and sings. There are two different versions of the Rapunzel doll from Tangled and they both have similar names. One has a light on her back so when it is on, it appears that her hair is glowing and she sings her song, “I See the Light”. The other one uses a wand. When in comes into contact with her gown, she lights up and sings her song.
#7 Rock Star Mickey by Fisher-Price Last year, Dance Star Mickey was the “must have” Christmas toy. This year it’s Rock Star Mickey. He dances, sings, “rocks out”. He does head bops, leg kicks, a split and plays the guitar with his nose. He’ll even teach you his dance moves. This is definitely for the younger age group. It’s recommended for ages 2 and up, but I wouldn’t go past 6 years old.
#8 Let’s Rock Elmo by Sesame Street Elmo seems to be a huge hit every Christmas, but this year I think he’s going to be even more popular. This time, he comes with a microphone, a tambourine and a drum set. What’s really cool is that he interacts with other Let’s Rock instruments(sold separately). He knows when you are playing any of the Let’s Rock instruments (guitar, keyboard or microphone) and starts playing with you. He also sings 6 songs. Personally, I like this toy better than the Rock Star Mickey, but it boils down to who your child loves more.
#9 Lalaloopsy Silly Hair Doll It seems like all of the Lalaloopsy dolls will be popular this Christmas, but I believe the Silly Hair Doll versions will be extra popular. I was once a wee lass and the main thing I loved about my dolls was the ability to play with their hair. Lalaloopsy doesn’t have the typical Barbie doll hair. The strands are thicker, bendable rubber so you can twist, curl or straighten them. Includes hair accessories and a pet with a bendable tail. I really like these dolls! I think they are creative and a nice change from the stereotypical girl’s doll.
#10 Xia Xia Pets by Cepia These are collectible hermit crabs that are colorful. They do a crab walk when you press their claws. There are four crab characters in all and each comes with a small friend under their shell. There are plenty of accessory shells and playsets too. I know, I didn’t quite understand the appeal either until I found out that the point is to collect and trade the shells. If there will be multiple kids around the same age opening presents together then maybe buy one for each child so they can trade after opening if they want.

Buck Owens almost single-handedly created the fabled Bakersfield sound that made such singers as Merle Haggard and Dwight Yoakam famous. And it’s pure Bakersfield Buck through most of this record, with its borderline maudlin tunes about absent daddies, bulging families with a christmas shopping list that threatens to put them in the poor house, and moralistic songs such as “It’s Not What You Give.” Ordinarily these sentiments would drive many a sane and good-hearted person from the room. Create a magical Christmas Eve for your family by preparing the Twelve Hours of Christmas. It will inspire family togetherness and foster a feeling of the true Christmas Spirit in your home as you spend time together having lots of fun! You can adapt this activity for young or old. It will help you pass the time until Santa arrives!
Come up with 12 activities that take less than an hour to complete. These activities can include putting a holiday puzzle together, a treasure hunt, a Christmas Bingo game (which if you or one of your children are computer savy, you can make fairly easily), Christmas Charades game, enjoy a special snack together, etc…
You will need a bell to ring which will signal time for everyone to gather for the next activity. You ring the bell on the hour. Designate a room to meet in and then introduce the activity. If you like, start with a fun breakfast for Christmas Eve. A special lunch can be one of the hours as well. You could have the day’s activities culminate with a visit from St. Nick himself and a family party with Grandpa and Grandma invited along with cousins, aunts and uncles. (This might take more than an hour but it could count as a couple of activities if you like.)
Plan and prepare all of this before Christmas Eve. If you want, you can put each child in charge of one of the activities. Really make it something special. With a little time and a lot of thought you can create a Christmas Eve that your whole family will enjoy. Make this a new tradition and don’t be surprised if your family wants to continue the fun next year!
