The New Year is practically knocking at the door. All you need is to take a few steps to open the door and let it in. Are you ready? Let’s see what you should do to be prepared to greet that which gives us a clean slate once a year. Why, the New Year, of course!

So, here’s what you need:

1. Your New Year’s Resolutions

If you haven’t learnt how to do this yet, there is still time. This list should be written in such a way that they will work for you (see my article: 7 Reasons Why New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work).

Also, follow the formula: “I will + wishes + due date.” Remember that you need to think positively about them, and be grateful even before you have received them.

2. Your Goals list

This is the list in which you are setting for the incoming year. Here, you follow the same steps suggested for the Resolutions, only now your goals are not really dreams or wishes. They are practical and more or less realistic (always remember to leave room for improvement and changes, if they become necessary, not to mention the little miracles that may come your way).

Think about Prosperity — your business or job, bank accounts, etc.; Health – exercise, nutrition, etc.; Relationships – family, friends, etc., and Lifestyle–hobbies, fun and recreation, etc. You can add more categories, of course, such as community service, for example.

3. Your Gratitude List

This is a list in which you write all the positive and negative aspects of your life during 2005. Actually, you make two lists, one for each. You will write with appreciation all that happened to you, and then give a reason why, explaining what you have learned from the lesson.

The positive list you also appreciate and keep; the negative, you let it go and burn. You can make a little ritual of this burning if you wish. It works beautifully.

Voilà! You are all set for the New Year and the great thing that will happen for you.

Of course, you need to have it all ready before midnight. I would like to suggest you start immediately, as the listing may take longer to write than you think. Also, start a tradition of wearing white in the New Year. It gives you a peaceful and joyous feeling. And, as you know, there is nothing better than feeling good.

Happy New Year!

One of the biggest concerns shoppers have this season is Christmas Wii availability. This hot new gaming system has really taken the country by storm, and many parents are flocking to the stores to purchase their kids a Wii gaming system for Christmas. Most are leaving the stores empty handed because the demand for this unit this Christmas outweighs the supply.

There is good news though about Christmas Wii availability. You can actually purchase one this Christmas, but you mat end up paying a little more than the in store asking price of $249. One of the best sources for finding a Wii online for a decent price is Ebay. I have seen brand new Wii game systems sold for $290 and upwards to around $400. Another strategy is to purchase a used Wii in good condition, as you can get a pretty good price on this.

If you compare the higher prices to the other video game systems on the market such as the Xbox 360 or the PS3 which are over $400 each, paying that much for a Wii is not a bad deal. Check out Ebay for a great listing of auctions, but as always be careful not to get scammed. When demand is short scammers tend to really be on the prowl. Here is a list of 3 things to be aware of when shopping on Ebay for a Wii.

1. Buy only from sellers with some buyer feedback. You can easily check on a buyer’s feedback by the star next to the sellers name. If they have no feedback, or little feedback be very cautious.

2. Pay for the item with Paypal. If the transaction turns out to be a fraud they are really good about working with you to get your money back. I have been scammed before, but thanks to Paypal I got my money back easily. Don’t pay with money order or Western Union, or anything offsite.

3. Ask as many questions as possible. Make sure you feel comfortable, and most of the time a fraudster will not respond to e-mails. Make sure you are dealing with a live person.

Christmas Wii availability can also be found in smaller towns at large retail stores sometimes. Just make sure you call before driving too far to see if they have any in stock. Typically around this time of year the Wii will be coming in stock every week to two weeks, so make sure to call your store often to see if they have any in stock, and ask the manager when they think it will be in stock. They usually will tell you that because they want your business.

Also look at Craigs List or other online classified websites to see if someone locally is selling a new or used Wii. Just deal cautiously, and don’t get yourself in any dangerous situations.

Keep looking hard, and you will find a Wii unit, but if you don’t it is not the end of the world as the stocks will come back, and make sure you always remember the real importance of the Christmas season.

Decorating your Christmas Table can be as expensive or as inexpensive as you want. If you are going to shop for items to use on your dinner table, be sure to set a budget. Even better, if you want to find bargains, either shop early or shop after Christmas for clearance sales.

1) To begin with, unless you have a really beautiful table top, you are going to want to find a table cloth. You can either purchase one already made to fit your table, or you can purchase fabric and make your own. It really is quite simple.

Measure the length of your table and add the amount you want for an overhang plus 1″ for seam allowance. Also measure width. Most fabrics come in widths of anywhere from 32″ to 60″.

2) The next items you will want are dinnerware, flatware (silverware), and stemware.

Dinnerware: There are tons of choices for holiday dinnerware on the market. You could choose a holiday pattern like these from Lenox:

Be careful though if you choose to use a pattern that you don’t make the table too busy or gaudy. With patterned dinnerware, you could keep the table cloth and napkins plain and keep the decorations to a minimum. You could also choose a plane pattern in a color that match your table.

Flatware or silverware: Flatware will also be an important part of your dinner table. Again, there are many choices on the market for flatware.

Napkins and Napkin Rings: There is a great website called storybookwoods that teaches you how to make napkins into recipes that your dinner guests can keep. Also BHG on You Tube has some great videos on how to fold napkins.

Search for a napkin folding guide that gives you step by step picture instructions for many different ways to fold napkins.

Stemware: Stemware comes in as many shapes and sizes as you could possibly imagine. Listed below are just a few of the thousands of choices out there.

Something that intriques me greatly is the use of recycled glass for stemware. In a world where “Going Green” is a household word, using 100% recycled glass stemware just makes sense.

Of course using what you have is always an option. Just be sure to match your table cloth, napkins and decorations to your dishes if they are patterned or a certain color. Now days it is easy to find Christmas decorations in every color.

3) Now we get down to the fun part… adding decorations… Ribbon and Bows are a beautiful way to add warmth, color and sparkle to your holiday table. Bows are easy to make once you know how.

Bows can be added to the back of each of your chairs.

If you are using folding chairs, you can also add some fabric and cushions to the chairs to add comfort and beauty. This can also be done if you are using unmatched chairs at your table.

Or you could just leave your chairs unmatched for a little country charm

Jars of all shapes and sizes are beautiful when filled with your favorite Christmas decorations in colors to match your table.

Real pine centerpieces are beautiful to use on your Christmas Dinner table.

Though the real pine centerpieces are beautiful, there are a couple of words of warning:

Be sure that your guests do not have allergies to pine as pine can have a strong scent, especially when it has become warm.
Be sure that you keep water in your centerpiece. There is floral foam in the center which absorbs water to keep each stem wet.
It is a good idea, if you purchase your real pine center pieces early in the season, that you try to keep them in a cool place, at least part of the time.
The idea is that you have a fresh, beautiful, decoration on your table the day of your dinner party.

Candles are a great way to add warmth and sparkle to you table. Place candles on mirrors for extra brilliance.

Add metallic garland around the table or use the packaged metallic icicles to create even more shimmer.

We’re approaching the season when many people begin to shop for Christmas. When I was a boy, Christmas shopping began in December, but then it moved to the day after Thanksgiving, and now malls all over the country begin to advertise for Christmas shopping as early as October. So it’s time to address this season that has become the super marketing event of the year.

Several years ago, I got a letter that typifies what many of us go through every Christmas season.

Dear Greg,

“I like a lot of things about Christmas: the lights, the carols, the food. Some people even become nicer than usual. But there’s a lot I really hate about it. Every year I run around trying to get just the right gift for dozens of people, and for what? Half the time I don’t get the right thing, and the other half of the time, people are happy for a few minutes and then it’s forgotten. It’s a lot of work for not much in the long run. But if I don’t buy any presents, people will be mad, so what can I do?”

My response:

What we all really want is to feel loved unconditionally. We want relationships where people care about us and enjoy being around us no matter what we do, but very few of us have known that kind of love–Real Love. Instead, we’ve always had to do the right things to make people happy, and if we didn’t, it was obvious from their words, tone of voice, posture, and other behaviors that they were disappointed in us, even irritated.

If we can’t have Real Love, we settle for buying the approval of other people. We try to be cooperative and successful so people will like us. We try to look good, say the right things, and do nice things for people in order to win their approval. Somehow we sense we’ve had to buy other people’s “love” with our behavior, but it still feels better than no approval at all.

Earning the affection of other people is a lot of work–most of us devote our entire lives to it–but what else can we do? Because we can’t live without that approval, we’re willing to keep on earning it, no matter what effort is required. Eventually, the feeling of conditional approval loses its thrill, but we still can’t stop earning it, because the feeling of losing it is intolerable.

So now we’re stuck. Earning conditional love isn’t all that fulfilling, but losing it is awful, so we keep pleasing people just so they won’t dislike us. As you said, if you don’t give any presents, you’re afraid people will be mad. At Christmas time especially–and on birthdays, Valentine’s Day, and some other occasions–many, perhaps most, of people the people around you expect you to buy gifts and in other ways prove your affection for them and earn their approval.

If you don’t do as they expect, they see it as proof that you don’t care about them, and then they’re disappointed and irritated. Regrettably, their disappointment and irritation prove without doubt that they don’t really care about you and your happiness. If they really cared about you, it wouldn’t matter what you gave them.

People who require gifts are telling you they don’t have enough Real Love in their lives, and they’re give you the job of filling their emptiness. The pressure to do that is greater than usual at Christmas, because our culture virtually decrees that we must do something at that “special time” for those around us. We ignore that tradition at our peril. Unfortunately, although no material gifts you give will ever fill the emptiness that results when people don’t have enough Real Love, those people will nonetheless insist with great energy that you try to do just that. With that demanding and ungrateful attitude, however, there are only two possibilities: They can briefly be satisfied with you in a superficial way, or they can be enormously disappointed.

You do not have to be a slave to these demands. Make your own choice about giving presents. You may still choose to give gifts to some people, but do not do that just because you fear what they’ll do if you don’t. If you give gifts from a sense of obligation, in effect you become a hostage to the people who have these expectations of you, and that’s a terrible way to live. When I hear people describe their Christmas shopping, the word I hear in conjunction with that activity more than any other is the word HAVE, as in “I HAVE to do my Christmas shopping.” There is so much obligation and duty associated with it, and something is wrong with that picture.

Understand that I’m not suggesting you change what you’re doing, only describing a possible solution to your frustration. So what will happen if you simply don’t give gifts to people who have traditionally expected them? Many people won’t care a bit. In fact, they’ll be relieved, because your gifts always made them feel obligated to give you something in return. Some other people will be disappointed and/or irritated, especially if they gave you a gift, but then what have you really lost? Those who become angry will only prove that they’re not really your friends anyway. They’ll be demonstrating that they’ve just been trading Imitation Love with you.

You can’t control what people think of you, but you can make your decision about Christmas gifts easier on them if you simply tell them about it ahead of time. You could explain that all the shopping has begun to interfere with your enjoyment of the season. You could tell them that you don’t expect anything from them, either, but that you’re not telling them what to do.

For years, I’ve made no Christmas purchases whatever. My wife, Donna, and I enjoy Christmas music, the food, the decorations, and a fire in the fireplace. But I don’t buy her a thing, nor does she get me anything. We’re not trying to make a point of some kind. We simply don’t need such gifts in order to feel loved. Instead we enjoy spending time with family members and friends. When we started doing this, a few people were offended, but either they got over it as they realized our intent, or they decided our friendship had no value to them. In both cases, it was a win.

A couple of years ago, a man asked my wife what I’d given her for Christmas. She said, “Every day of the year–many times a day–he kisses me, touches me, and looks at me with an affection I never thought possible. And that’s what I got for Christmas, too.”

He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “That’s all you got? He didn’t give you a gift?”

Donna smiled and said, “He loves me with all his heart. He’s my best friend. What could I possibly want more than that?”

I’m not telling anyone to stop giving gifts. If my children were small, we’d still be putting gifts under the tree. There’s something magical and unique about believing in Santa. Donna still sends gifts to some of the young children in her extended family. I can tell you, however, that since we quit feeling the least bit obligated to give gifts, we don’t feel pressured or rushed at that season. Christmas is a delightful time to share with our friends and family the unconditional love we feel for them, just as we hope to do all the other days of the year
