America’s Rose Parade
As the New Year blooms with the promise of more beautiful and colorful memories to cherish, United States of America welcomes it in the most appropriate manner – the annual Rose Parade. This flower festival consists of equestrians on horses, bands majestically marching, a thrilling football game and the highlight of the event: colorful and artistic arrays of floats which are fully covered with the most beautiful flowers imaginable.
The first flower parade was held in Pasadena, California on New Year’s Day of 1890. The producers of this annual event call themselves Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association. Its role is very important in ensuring the success of the event. Some of the tasks of the group include choosing the participants, inspecting the floats for safety, directing the assembly and assisting the public and guests.
Through the years, the participants have grown in number, and their floats have grown in complexity. Before, carriages of volunteer participants were the ones that got decorated and paraded. In the recent years, the participants already include community groups or big associations that really spend a lot of time, effort and money for their floats. It is even said that roughly 80 000 hours of collective work are needed for the completion of this festival!
Now, thousands of spectators flock along the roads where the parade will pass by, but through media coverage to over 100 countries in over 20 languages, the whole world can view the beauty of the flower-decorated floats.
If you watch this Rose parade, and the numerous state flags or organization flags representing the makers of the floats, you will truly appreciate the efforts of the whole USA nation to start the year right: bringing peace, beauty and hope.
